As the end of the year quickly approaches, life can certainly get hectic.  We enjoy the fun, friends and family and yet deal with stressful holiday commitments, crazy people flooding the malls and all of the accounting items that come about due to holiday expenses.  In the insulation business, we can add all of those customers that suddenly realize their insulation has been removed all over their plant for maintenance purposes, and it is about to get extremely cold outside,  creating multitudes of small projects that absolutely have to be done immediately.

My usual response is to complain and attempt to avoid these situations whenever possible.  I find it is very inconvenient for me to be stuck in traffic, having to attend various events after working all day to be around a group of people who are all smiling and having fun.  I generally allow myself to get so busy that I really don’t enjoy the celebration.

This year I am going to try to change my mindset and concentrate on all the good things in my life.  I am thankful that my wife and daughters are happy and healthy. The fact that Jan has stuck with me all these years truly is a miracle!  My daughter recently married a great guy who loves her very much; finally a son in the family!  My other daughter lives and works in Florida and is completing her Masters Degree in December. The wedding gave us the chance to see many of our extended family at Thanksgiving.

I am thankful for Christmas.  I am thankful that God gave His Son Jesus for us. This is the time of the year when many people have the desire to give and help others.  Gifts are given to the people we know and love and also some we don’t know.  I am grateful for those volunteers who stand out in the cold to collect money and food so that those less fortunate can receive gifts, food and clothing that will make their life better for a while.

I am thankful that I live in this country.  Despite the downturn in the economy, and the inability for our government to agree on even the simplest items and the 24 hours news heads proclaiming doom and gloom is ahead, we still have a far better life than 99 percent of the rest of the world.  We have instant access to food already prepared for us.  We can actually watch movies on our phones. Our homes are heated and air conditioned, and as someone pointed out to me last week, we have a continuous supply of drinking water at all times.  So much that we wash our clothes, water our lawns and shower in drinking water.  Take a minute to think about what percentage of the world’s population has that luxury.

So as we all rush through the next month, getting everything prepared for the holidays and the end of the year, I encourage you to set aside some time and think about what you are grateful for this year.  Have a Merry Christmas, and I look forward to seeing you next year, hopefully, in Key West, Florida at the winter meeting!

Sincerely,

Jeff DeGraaf,

MICA President
